Valentino Rossi crashed out of Sunday’s Grand Prix of Aragon in a scary incident that left the nine-time world champion initially motionless and his factory Yamaha team and fans holding their collective breath.
According to Dr. Michele Zasa from Clinica Mobile, Rossi suffered a concussion and “suspected loss of consciousness.” He was transported to a local hospital for a CT scan and observation. Later that evening, Rossi was released and returned to his motorhome in the Motorland Aragon paddock.
“From a neurological point of view, he has recovered very well,” Zasa said. “A CT scan of the skull ruled out any bleeding in the brain. As a precaution, he will be observed in the coming hours, but there are no special reasons for concern.” Rossi received no additional injuries.
The crash happened on the fourth lap of the race. Closing fast on Dani Pedrosa approaching downhill turn 7, Rossi ran wide and shot off the track onto the wet turf lining the racetrack. His YZR-M1 lost traction, stepped sideways, and highsided him. Remarkably, Rossi and his tumbling bike did not appear to make contact.
“Everything is okay,” Rossi reported on Monday, “I did not injure myself too much except for a big bump to the head. Last night, I had a little headache, but today I am fine—100 percent.”
Dainese released data gathered from Rossi’s leathers. Speed at the beginning of the crash was 61.2 mph. From start to finish, the incident lasted 4.7 seconds over a distance of 70 yards—more than half the length of a football field. Rossi’s airbag inflated completely in 44 milliseconds.
“If I had gone off the track one meter before,” Rossi said, “I would have just gone wide. Instead, I touched the grass and I fell. The track was still wet from the morning shower, and there was nothing to be done.
“It was a real shame because I had recovered the gap in the first few laps, and I was there with the leading riders. Even though we had a difficult weekend, we were competitive, and this was supposed to be a track that is not very good for us.”
